The evening of 27 September, in New York on the sidelines of the 70th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
At the meeting the sides discussed issues of multifaceted cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations. "We are interested in developing relations with the UN and would like that our relations in strategic sectors acquire a particular character," - said President Emomali Rahmon at the beginning of the meeting .
Emomali Rahmon expressed gratitude to Ban Ki-moon and all UN agencies for their continued and full support to the initiatives of Tajikistan on water issues and promoting the global agenda on these issues, which are reflected in various resolutions of the General Assembly, as well as assistance and support in managing the consequences of natural disasters in Tajikistan.
Emomali Rahmon noted with satisfaction that: "Collaboration and joint activities of the Government of Tajikistan and the UN agencies give positive results and contributed to the systematic reduction of poverty over the last decade, which is the goal number 1 of the Millennium Development Goals. In addition, Tajikistan has made full provision of universal primary education in the country, halved maternal mortality and completely eliminated malaria."
Ban Ki-moon expressed his gratitude to President Emomali Rahmon for his visit to New York and direct participation in the 70th UN General Assembly and shared deep impressions of his visit to Tajikistan. UN Secretary-General, once again congratulating Emomali Rahmon with the desired results of the international high-level conference on the results of the implementation of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life", 2005-2015, which was held in Dushanbe in June this year, expressed satisfaction with the effective implementation and review of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life", adopted by the United Nations at the initiative of Tajikistan.
The two sides exchanged views on issues of social and economic development of the region, especially in Afghanistan and the implementation of regional strategic projects in the communications and energy sectors, including the construction of new railways and roads and power lines. The two sides also exchanged opinions on climate change, increasing the number of natural disasters, financial, economic, food and energy crises, infectious diseases, as well as terrorism, extremism, security, protection of regional stability, armed conflicts in several countries and regions of the world, other modern challenges and threats.
