Working visit to Shahriston district

Following his working trip to Ayni, the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon arrived in Shahriston district of Sughd Province, where he attended an official opening ceremony of the first stage of the Shahriston water supply line. This line will provide more than 10,000 Shahriston residents with safe drinking water. The water network cost over 2 million somoni to build through the investment project of rehabilitation and construction of drinking water supply system.

Following the completion of the project, another 11,000 people, in total of 21,000 residents of Shahristan district will be provided with clean drinking water.

President Rahmon stressed that such plans will be implemented throughout the country within the framework of the Water Sector Reform Program for 2016-2025 and within the International Decade for Action - Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028.

This was followed by the unveiling ceremonies of the National Flag Square with a 50-meter flagpole, which in turn was followed by the opening ceremony of a secondary educational institution no. 19 designed for 1,420 students.

President Rahmon also visited the Jasurbek cooperative farm, where he attended the potato and agricultural exhibition. In recent years, the area designated for potatoes has increased in Shahriston, with the volume of potato production in reaching more than 512,000 tonnes in 2020.

In the cities and districts of Sughd region over the past five years the land for potatoe cultivation has risen from 16,000 hectares in 2017 to 23,000 hectares in 2020. Over the first six months of this year, more than 43,000 tonnes of potatoes have been harvested, which is 7,000 tonnes more than last year.

President Rahmon also took part in the launching ceremony of the Murghi Shahriston Poultry farming, built by domestic entrepreneur Somon Kurbonov.

The poultry farm contains 80,000 chickens, with plans to increase the numbers to 120,000 in the near future. The new farm will eventually produce 170 tonnes of poultry per month.

Concluding his trip, President Emomali Rahmon held a meeting with the local representatives and noted that the government is continually working to ensure sustainable socio-economic development of Shahriston. Since gaining independence, the government has invested more than 2.5 billion somoni for bettering the region. He noted that during this period, nine public investment projects worth more than 1.6 billion somoni have been implemented in the region, and seven more are under in progress.

To date, 11 industrial enterprises are operating in Shahristan district, and in the first five months of 2021 they have produced 15 million somoni worth of industrial products. According to statistics, the volume of agricultural product in the district for the first five months of this year has amounted to 25 million somoni, which is 47% more compared to last year.

The discussion with the locals also touched upon the development of potato growing, beekeeping, establishment of workshops for packaging of agricultural products, and exporting local goods. Maintaining peace and stability and strengthening national unity was the main item of the meeting agenda.
